What Hiring Managers Really Want to See on Your Resume

Most would agree, crafting your resume can be the most daunting part of the job search process. It’s also where the most mistakes are made. On average, a hiring manager will spend 6 seconds reviewing your resume. There are certain points, if missing, will likely result in not making it past the stack.
So what exactly do hiring managers want to see? Beyond the obvious, like ensuring that your resume is error-free, there are some big-picture issues to consider.
Get specific about the job posting.
As tempting as it might be to send a generic version of your resume to multiple employers, it will only hinder your chances by blending in with every other resume to pass their desk. Speak their language – be sure to include keywords you find within the job posting and company website.
Highlight accomplishments rather than job responsibilities.
It’s easy to slip into a routine where you simply start listing job duties. The truth is, most hiring managers are looking for examples of your work ethic rather than mundane tasks. Don’t be afraid to boast, and remember to be specific.
Find the right balance of length
While there are no real rules governing resume length, there is an art to finding the right balance of information. Generally, you want to limit to a maximum of two pages, but don’t feel you have to use two pages if one will do. Conversely, don’t leave out important information simply to conform to a one-page standard. You’d be surprised how much the soft skills you learned while earning money for school matters to employers.
