This role requires intermediate expertise and the ability to handle diverse tasks proficiently, employing analytical methods to address various challenges. As part of the Electrical Engineering team, you will oversee the operations and maintenance of electrical substations, collection systems, transmission lines, and key electrical components across our renewable energy assets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead electrical engineering initiatives within O&M, focusing on maintenance and enhancements of renewable energy facilities, including defining requirements, reviewing engineering drawings, and managing projects.
- Ensure high equipment availability through a robust preventative maintenance program for systems and facilities ranging from 12kV to 500kV.
- Provide technical support to field personnel for high voltage collection, substation, and transmission equipment up to 500kV.
- Conduct and review power system studies, arc flash analysis, relay settings, and coordination.
- Analyze data to identify trends and system events for reporting and process improvement.
- Perform Root Cause Analysis to determine failure modes and causes accurately.
- Address electrical equipment issues within renewable energy facilities.
- Develop processes and procedures for safe and effective operation and maintenance of renewable facilities.
- Support procurement by providing technical expertise and overseeing factory testing of major electrical equipment.
- Offer engineering consulting support to various organizational areas, including Construction and Power Marketing.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records.
- Build relationships with third-party service providers.
- Train, coach, and mentor electrical field technicians and operations staff in the maintenance and operation of electrical systems.
- Plan and direct switching and tagging for office and field personnel for wind farm operations and restoration.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory reliability standards and requirements, including NERC Reliability Standards.
- Ensure all work conforms to regulatory and manufacturer requirements.
- Provide technical support for resolving codes and standards issues (NEC, NESC, NFPA 70E, ANSI, UL, IEC).
- Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for relevant NERC Reliability Standards.
- Perform other assigned responsibilities as needed.
Required Skills and Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university, or equivalent.
- A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university can count towards experience.
- Professional Engineering (P.E) License preferred but not required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in utility or power plant operations and maintenance; over 8 years for a Senior HV Electrical Engineer position.
- Strong communication skills, capable of training on complex operations.
- Commitment to safe operations, serving as a role model and resource.
- Understanding of electrical and mechanical theory and concepts.
- Capability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
- Proficiency with computer applications (e-mail, internet, Microsoft Office suite).
- Knowledge of protective relay application and software (e.g., Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), GE Multilin Enervista UR).
- Ability to professionally represent the company externally.
- Understanding of NERC Reliability Standards.
- Ability to climb vertical ladders up to 300 feet.
- Ability to travel up to 25% domestically and internationally.
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a passport.
