If you became an engineer because you wanted to solve problems, build things, and see your work running in the field – not spend your career reviewing someone else’s designs, keep reading.
This role puts you in charge of instrumentation-focused capital projects from concept through commissioning at a major refinery. You’ll still be doing engineering while leading projects, working alongside Operations, Reliability, Construction, and Maintenance to deliver improvements that make an immediate impact on the plant.
If you enjoy seeing your work installed, commissioned, and operating successfully, this is the kind of engineering role that’s becoming harder to find.
What you’ll be doing is leading multiple instrumentation capital projects from initial scope through startup. You’ll develop engineering packages, create project scopes, estimates, and schedules, review technical deliverables, coordinate with Operations, Reliability, Mechanical Engineering, Construction, and outside engineering firms, and keep projects moving from idea to execution. You’ll spend time both in the office and in the refinery supporting field walkdowns, construction, commissioning, and startup. Projects include instrumentation upgrades, tank level measurement systems, hazardous gas detection, and other refinery improvement initiatives.
What you get is the opportunity to own projects from beginning to end instead of handing them off after design. This is a hybrid position based in Downers Grove with regular travel to the refinery (typically one day each week), giving you the flexibility of office work while staying connected to the field. The assignment is expected to run approximately one year, pays $70/hour, includes a standard Monday-Friday schedule, and offers $100/day per diem for qualified travelers plus mileage reimbursement.
Who you are is an engineer first. You enjoy instrumentation as much as project execution and want to remain technically involved instead of becoming a full-time project manager. You have experience in refining, petrochemical, power generation, or another heavy industrial process environment, and you’re comfortable balancing engineering calculations, design reviews, stakeholder coordination, and field execution. Experience with refinery instrumentation, DeltaV, Rosemount systems, Management of Change (MOC), commissioning, and startup is a plus.
Curious about the projects or want to know more about the team before making any decisions? Reach out. We’d be happy to walk you through the opportunity.
