Some instrument jobs are little more than PMs and calibration routes.
This isn’t one of them.
If you’re the tech everyone calls when a loop won’t behave, a valve won’t stroke, or the DCS says one thing while the field says another, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy during this refinery turnaround.
You’ll work on live process equipment alongside experienced maintenance and operations teams, solving real instrumentation problems that help get the unit back online safely and on schedule.
What you’ll be doing is installing, testing, calibrating, troubleshooting, and repairing field instrumentation throughout the turnaround. You’ll work with transmitters, control valves, regulators, actuators, switches, relays, and complete instrument loops. You’ll troubleshoot DCS and PLC systems, perform SIS testing, stroke valves, upload and download instrument configurations, read P&IDs, loop drawings, logic diagrams, and schematics, and document your work so the next person knows exactly what was done. You’ll spend your time in the field—not behind a desk.
What you get is $65/hour, $100/day per diem paid weekly for qualified travelers, and mileage reimbursement for mobilization and demobilization. The turnaround runs from late September through late October at a major refinery, with a 4×10 schedule (Monday-Thursday) and plenty of overtime available during the outage. If you like shutdown work where the days move fast and every shift matters, this is exactly that kind of project.
Who you are is someone who enjoys troubleshooting more than simply replacing parts. You have experience maintaining instrumentation in a refinery, chemical plant, power plant, or similar heavy industrial facility. You’re comfortable working around operating process units, can read the drawings before asking where the wires go, and understand that good documentation is just as important as a successful repair. Turnaround and live-unit experience will put you at the front of the line.
